Corporate Communications Director

The Corporate Communications Director will support the Head of Communications and Philanthropy and play an integral role in shaping and strengthening JCPenney's brand and reputation. Primary responsibilities will include leading end-to-end communications support for major external announcements, driving a proactive media engagement strategy while also fielding inbound requests, and establishing JCPenney's presence at industry events. You will join a growing team of creative communicators and serve as a key leader in the function.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develops and pitches effective company/brand messaging to drive awareness of JCPenney, working closely with internal business partners, while also supporting Stores who benefit from positive local media exposure.
  • Drive end-to-end corporate communications support for brand launches and announcements
  • Develops and maintains close working relationships with national and major news publications and broadcast networks, retail and marketing trades, Internet and social media outlets, and opinion leaders to place and influence relevant editorial coverage of JCPenney brands
  • Manages and protects the Company's corporate brand through successful issues management, including but not limited to media relations plan development, crisis communications, company statements, press releases, talking points and scripts for executive leaders.
  • Shapes JCPenney's presence at leading industry events, building relationships with event organizers, vetting and negotiating contracts, and identifying relevant speaking and media engagement opportunities
  • Supports development of executive communications strategy for select leaders.

Core Competencies & Accomplishments:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, English or Marketing. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ Years of Public Relations in an Agency setting or Corporate Communications Department.
  • Exceptional writing and editing abilities; ability to flex tone and voice for the need at hand
  • Previous experience across internal communications, executive communications and/or social media preferred
  • Retail industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Team management experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally in fast-paced environment
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and project management skills required
  • Strong interpersonal skills, poise and confidence when working with senior leadership and exceptional judgement
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
