Senior Copy Manager (ACD)

JCPenney is seeking a conceptual and collaborative copywriter with an acute sense of detail to bring retail marketing strategies to life in digital, print, content stories, social, broadcast and more. Candidate’s work will align to company objectives and copy voice, with the goal of increasing customer engagement. Candidate should have no fewer than eight years’ copywriting experience, with demonstrated experience leading a team.

This position reports to a Creative Director in the JCPenney marketing department. In addition to their own workload, the Senior Creative Manager will manage a team of copywriters, manage their team’s assignments and workload, provide development opportunities, assess talent and conduct performance reviews.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with creative director and project management to understand objectives, strategy, budgets and schedules
  • Understand our customer and tailor messages that appeal to them
  • Implement language that resonates with our customer
  • Bring a range of copywriting experience to the company
  • Be able to work quickly and efficiently
  • Be a student of retail, offer insights on current retail landscape and competitor set
  • Understand and be able to act on research findings
  • Lead a small team of copywriters
  • Partner with the JCPenney in-house Spanish translation team 
  • Other copywriting work as assigned

Core Competencies & Accomplishments:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism or marketing
  • Eight or more years of copywriting—agency or in-house marketing experience preferred
  • Retail experience preferred
  • Some radio and television production experience required
  • Experience directing talent for television or radio
  • Demonstrated understanding of and curiosity about current and emerging media  
  • Passion for creating compelling messages and rich storytelling 
  • Ability to collaborate with creative team members, including other writers
  • Demonstrated understanding of company’s business needs, and the ability to concept and deliver compelling solutions that align with overall creative strategy
  • Proven ability to listen and act on stakeholder feedback with creative solutions and a positive attitude
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint required
  • Maturity and a can-do attitude
  • Embody a growth mindset
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard
  • Excellent time management and communication skills
  • Management experience
