Senior Manager - Release Automation

The Sr. Manager will be responsible for release automation engineering for JCPenney’s eCommerce platform. This position will be leading a team of software/systems engineers in development and adoption of automation and productivity softwares/tools needed to facilitate the software development life cycle to push new features from development to production in a predictable, low risk and agile manner.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a deep understanding in release automation, cloud architecture and computing, build/deployment automation (CICD), applications and systems & managing a highly scalable, high traffic customer facing ecommerce platform. You will be expected to improve team agility, efficiency and productivity through coaching and implementing best practices. Need to have an attitude that embraces agile practices and automation. You will need enough technical depth to conduct deep dives, lead root cause analysis efforts and defend your opinions about infrastructure/platform engineering & automation practices. Need to have strong sense of urgency in solving problems and have solution oriented mindset.

The candidate will work together with the product, application development, platform & devops, engineering, architects, security teams to plan, develop, setup and operate the ecommerce platform engineering practices. Also ensure that teams have appropriate requirements, direction, and resources to deliver effectively. Help software/systems engineers resolve both technical problems as well as human resources issues. Provide guidance & coaching to motivate, and lead team members (direct reports) to their optimum performance levels and career development. Coach the team to become an influential enabling shared service team instead of order-taking shared service team.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of software engineers focused on Release Automation to enable speed to market with high quality for JCPenney’s ecommerce platform
  • Manage, coach, and develop the analytical and technical skills of team members
  • Lead others to work effectively in a strong customer service/team oriented environment
  • Develop and promote Automation testing frameworks, tools and processes across multiple Application Development teams to enable them delivery Business Capabilities with high Quality and Speed
  • Develop and deliver the strategy for Automation testing and fully functional CICD platform
  • Collaborate with the Architecture, Application Development, DevOps/Platform teams to contribute to the development of the ecommerce eco-system
  • Be a security champion on the ecommerce team and work closely with the security team to implement security scanning (both static and dynamic)
  • Plan and manage scope to ensure commitments are achieved within agreed upon time, cost and quality
  • Provide financial forecasts and ongoing reconciliation of resources and project costs
  • Manage key vendor relationships and engage in negotiations as necessary

Core Competencies & Accomplishments:

  • Exceptional technical and non-technical presentation and communication skills
  • Proven ability to lead a team of highly technical software/systems engineering staff and earn trust of team members and stakeholders
  • Management of engineering resources, staffing, mentoring, enhancing and maintaining best-of-class global engineering teams
  • Work closely with the engineers and other engineering managers to architect and develop the best technical design and approach
  • Passion for building strong working relationships across a large organization
  • Proven technical knowledge of CICD (Continuous Integration Continuous Delivery), Test automation, Acceptance Piplines, Test Data Management, Service Virtualization to support Application Development
  • Knowledge of cloud computing (AWS, Azure, Google etc.) and cloud automation tools (Cloud formation, Terraforms etc.)
  • Experience in implementating best practices around CICD and Automation frameworks
  • Always looking at what is happening in the industry on the Release Automation space and bring the best practices back to the ecommerce platform
  • Good technical experience in DevOps, software/systems engineer, software development & cloud engineering and operations, or related role
  • Experience in reporting status of development, quality, operations to senior management
  • Experience implementing security scanning frameworks to identify and address security vulnerabilities
  • Management and execution of operational excellence and release quality KPI's
  • Consistent track record of being proactive, ambitious, and detail-oriented
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
