General Description

The UNIX & Middleware Sr Engineer 2 – IT Operations & Support will report to Senior Manager - IT Operations and Support. 

 

The Linux Sr. Systems Engineer 2 will work in our Bangalore office that supports our complex infrastructure (1200 servers of which are Linux based), which support the Enterprise, non-Enterprise (i.e. specific to Stores) and Digital Platform applications that power our Retail operations. In this dynamic role you will be responsible for architecting, engineering, installing, customizing, developing, implementing and/or maintaining the existing IT infrastructure and our upcoming cloud technologies as an in-house SME 

 

Responsibilities:  

 

  • 8+ years or more of strong hands on experience in Linux - Red Hat (RHEL) / Oracle (UEK) - 6.x or 7.x – in Unix/Linux Troubleshooting as a member of Operations team /Building/ Security Hardening, Performance Tuning and Troubleshooting. 

  • Minimum of 3-4 Years of Automation experience in (python, Ansible Perl etc.) Scripting & must have automation experience in system admin space  

  • Possess advanced knowledge and skill for all Linux environments. 

  • Create and maintain bare-metal and virtual machines with the appropriate distribution and patch levels of Linux and network configuration, using tools that include Satellite Server, Puppet and BigFix. 

  • Provision/configure required software onto servers, such as web servers and databases. 

  • Evaluate, improve, and maintain the information security throughout the Linux infrastructure. 

  • Monitor and correct critical server issues and create recovery processes for failures and performance bottlenecks. 

  • Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools 

  • Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability 

  • Maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies 

  • Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks 

  • Engineer multi factor authentication between Linux environments and the enterprise Windows infrastructure components 

  • Engineer solutions for baselines to operate in full standalone mode, domain mode, and fully integrated mode for all classification levels and enclaves. 

  • Need to be able to work with the developers to transition applications from one platform to another to include from physical to virtual and virtual to cloud. 

  • Ensure technical documentation exists for all systems and is kept up to date to include inventory and patch levels of all systems to include hostnames, property numbers, IP addresses, enclave, number of cores, number of processors, admin passwords, certificates, and service accounts on a monthly interval. 

  • Document system configurations to include passwords, access controls, version number, and revision numbers, patch levels, and inventory to include hostnames, TCP/IP addresses, number of processors, and number of cores, memory, and license keys. 

  • Continually transition knowledge to other team members through training and assistance on how to use the technology using industry best practices. 

  • Maintain a service level of at least 99.9% for Linux production servers. 

  • 2-3 years of AIX 6.x and 7.x - Building, Security Hardening, Performance Tuning and Troubleshooting. 

  • 2-3 years of Solaris 10 - Building, Security Hardening, Performance Tuning and Troubleshooting 

  • 2 years working knowledge in building and troubleshooting on Oracle RAC Cluster on virtual systems. 

  • 1 year working knowledge in building and troubleshooting on Red Hat Clusters on virtual systems.  

  • 2-3 years’ Experience in working with Venter virtual servers, migrating hosts and data stores, maintaining servers, performance tuning.  

  • Familiar with different monitoring tools (Splunk, Wily, Team quest, Net cool, etc.) 

  • Familiar with filesystems gfs2 (Linux) and gpfs (AIX) 

  • Experience in Oracle Space Walk and/or Red Hat Satellite for patching automation. 

  • As a senior engineer should have ability to mentor and coach Junior Linux/Middleware resources 

  • Demonstrated ability to go the extra mile, Self-starter and self-motivated with a can do attitude. Comfortable working in fast paced dynamic 

  • Open for shifts and weekend on-call support 

  • Adopting emerging technologies (e.g. IaaS/PaaS),DevOps,Agile etc. 

  • Managing problem resolution and escalations 

  • Communicating issues to stakeholders and team members  

  • Analyzing trends to provide predictive/proactive root cause analysis 

  • Researching and recommending alternative actions for problem resolution with minimal direction 

  • Collaboration with Engineering and onsite teams. 

 

 

Good to Have 

 

  • SOX/PCI Compliance, to keep the servers in compliance and remediate issues to Compliance Team 

  • Participating in system testing and implementation of components 

  • Ensuring functional and technical integrity of infrastructure designs  

  • Participate in the design of information and operational support systems
