Engineer 1 - Software Packaging and Deployment (SPAD) 

Job description: 
JCPenney is looking for a passionate, results-oriented and data driven Lead to support our rapidly evolving and expanding Software Packaging and Deployment team.The SPAD team is responsible for managing automated software purposing system that help ensure JC Penney is always in compliance in terms of software licensing and patch Management. Packaging Engineer will partner with Lead Engineer, Customers and other Key Stakeholders, including Stores, Field Operations, IBO, Non-stores, Engineering, Merchandising, Distribution Centers, Corporate Head Quarters, Enterprise fulfilment, Marketing, Site Operations, Content Management, for understanding of packaging/re-packaging requirements, compatibility and deployments. 

The successful candidate should have good communication and strong technical troubleshooting skills. He/she will report into the Manager, SPAD. 


  • Hands on experience on Workstation and Server patching 

  • Well versed on Complete Microsoft patching process (End-to End). 

  • Hands On Experience on Patching troubleshooting and fixing. 

  • Well Understanding of Change management for Patching process 

  • Collaboration with team members/ other teams on application/package deployment 

  • Participate in On-call as needed, Participate in Peak Period Coverage Activities as needed 

  • Develop, maintain, and deploy secure web browser packages using a variety of web browsers including Internet Explorer, FireFox, and Chrome in a Windows environment. 

  • Develop and follow procedures for testing applications prior to deployment. 

  • Document the customizations and changes made during the Deployment process 

  • Participate in the preparation of materials and oral presentations for customers and management. 

  • Must have good understanding in Packaging, SCCM deployment best practices and standards. 

  • Excellent understanding of software deployment testing using SCCM 

  • Proficient in Application Remediation for Windows 

  • Help deliver service improvements without unnecessary investment in new products by working smarter, provision of better tools and better use of product set 

  • Work, research, troubleshoot and analyses problems independently 

  • Prepare documentation for application/package deployment. 

  • Rework/upgrade/enhance existing installation packages 

  • Work with Application Developers and Engineering to ensure all signed off packages deemed suitable for deployment include installation plans/instructions, service desk training/documentation, back-out procedures, schedules and other information necessary to ensure a high probability of first-pass success for production deployments. 

  • Create, validate, maintain, deploy, rollback new custom packages or releases in an enterprise environment using SCCM 2012, SCCM 2016 

  • Meets regularly with team, Engineering and Manager to understand priorities and to ensure the successful completion of project deliverables. 

  • Advanced troubleshooting of application packaging/repackaging and Roll outs, problem management for complex rollouts 

  • 3rdparty Patching tool experience. 

Core Competencies & Accomplishments: 

  • SCCM based software packaging, deployment and Flexera knowledge is a must 

  • 3-5 years and above experience in software/patch deployment and SCCM administrator 

  • Well aware of Application packaging knowledge and hands on experience on application customization deployment in SCCM. 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Scripting: Windows PowerShell, WSH scripting, VB Scripting, Batch Scripting, Wise Script Editor, Batch Files and tools such as SMS/SCCM installer is a must 

  • Analyzing, testing and engineering Application deployment and packaging with SCCM 2016 

  • A thorough understanding of how applications install on the Microsoft Windows platforms. 

  • Knowledge of Active Directory, Microsoft Registry and ability to query or modify settings. 

  • Experience with SCCM administration including but not limited to packages, programs, advertisements , applications, deployment types, deployments collections management, client troubleshooting ,OS deployment,task sequences, WinPE 

  • Experience with remote access tools, including RDP, NetMeeting and Windows Desktop 

  • Familiarity with core enterprise technologies including but not limited to: TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, PXE, etc. 

  • Windows Firewall, security best practices, Active Directory, LDAP, ADSI, Group Policy, SQL Server, T-SQL, SSRS, IIS, HTTPS / TLS, BITS, WSUS, SCUP etc. 

  • Detailed knowledge of Windows Win7, Win8 and Win10 operating systems and Windows registry manipulation 

  • Familiar with building silent custom installation packages in a MSI/MST format and deploying to Windows 7 /10 or Windows Servers by mean of self-install via Software Center or advertised deployment 

  • Thorough knowledge of MS Windows server and desktop operating systems. 

  • Experience working in a large enterprise environment and networks. 

  • Experience in building custom/ad hoc reports in SCCM as needed to accurately identify PC application deployments, configuration characteristics and security baselines within the enterprise 

  • Proficiency in SQL to write reports and troubleshoot issues, support creation of custom inventories 

  • Knowledge of interaction between operating System and application package 

  • Self-starter that can work independently but also enjoys a team atmosphere 

  • Experience performing production & end user support 

  • Good attitude, go-getter and ability to grasp new skills in a minimal turnaround time. 

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines 

  • Ability to manage relationships and build rapport with a focus on client service 

  • Excellent communication skills 

  • Good written, presentation and verbal skills 

  • Ability to work well in a Global environment and lead meetings
