Job description 

JCPenney is looking for a passionate, results-oriented Monitoring Associate Engineer to support our rapidly evolving and expanding Monitoring team.This Monitoring team is highly engaged with the development, architecture, testing and product teams to ensure our systems are built with the highest quality standards, in an agile/fast-paced environment. Also involves investigation and analysis of recurring incidents, patterns, system health, version upgrades and other activities. Associate Engineer will partner with other Key Stakeholders, including Stores, Field Operations, IBO, Non-stores, Engineering, Merchandising, Distribution Centres, Corporate Head Quarters, Enterprise fulfilment, Marketing, Site Operations, Content Management, and others in requirements gathering, configuring, resolution of bug fixes and other tasks on a regular basis. 

The objective of this role is to manage and brings solution around comprehensive monitoring of Business processes from a Data, IT and process point of view, End user Experience Monitoring supported by (EEM) Full stack monitoring and Technical Monitoring to cover the full scope of the JC Penney multi layered Infrastructure enabling the applications and business processes and thereby ensure seamless business and IT operations. 

We are looking for an experienced candidate that has Java, J2EE, Jenkins, Splunk, Dynatrace, Linux, continuous integration, continues delivery skills and has worked in an Agile development environment. This individual will be part of several important initiatives to deliver the next generation Monitoring Capability. 

The successful candidate should have outstanding communication and strong technical troubleshooting skills. He/She will report into the Sr. Manager, Monitoring & Dev Tools. 


  • This team works across a multi-platform, multi-distributed environment, to ensure uninterrupted technology performance and timely messaging of service impacting events 

  • In this role, you will own refining requirements for monitoring and event management tools and participating in the development, implementation, and day to day activities associated with the JCP monitoring and event management toolset and platform. 

  • Design, develop and deploy various monitoring solutions. 

  • Understand end to end Infrastructure and associated business processes 

  • Evaluate various monitoring solution available in the market suitable for JC Penney requirements 

  • Ensure monitoring solutions are developed and deployed to take care of current and future needs of TOS 

  • Develop functional procedure and system documentation as needed. 

  • Develop dashboards for IT operations, production support, app/dev teams, as well as executives 

  • Analyse and identify thresholds to establish meaningful alerts. 

  • Integrate monitoring tools with 3rd party service solutions e.g. ticketing, CMDB, etc. 

  • Configure and maintain infrastructure and APM monitoring suites 

  • Configure and maintain external synthetic and RUM 

  • Work with infrastructure teams to establish baseline monitoring and thresholds for core technologies. 

  • Work with application teams to create custom alerts for critical applications. 

  • Work with various teams to understand transactions that need to be monitored and develop solutions to meet those requirements. 

  • Perform configuration, tuning, and troubleshooting of monitoring platform. 

  • Manage the monitoring solution with the help of the team working as per the design 

  • Ensure the current monitoring tools, solutions and operations are running on a day to day basis in an automated way 

  • Develop solutions that improve root cause analysis effectiveness and correlation of events 

  • Provide technical expertise to support interpretation of data captured by monitoring solutions 

  • Ensure improvement opportunities including automation and aggregation are identified to improve monitoring capabilities in a continual basis 

  • Upgrade and patch monitoring tools minimizing technical debt within environment 

  • Support activities that ensure that monitoring infrastructure meets all security and compliance requirements 

  • Develop Operational Dashboard & Reporting for the identified E2E Business Process KPIs 

  • Manage & Run E2E monitoring solutions on a Day2Day Basis 

  • Drive Daily Operations, Part of Critical Situation teams, analysis on existing incidents, Problem Management & build CR backlogs 

  • Drive improvements within landscape and business processes. Work closely with JC Penney services Teams, Business process owners & Partner Teams 

  • Interacts with customers, developers, architects and requestors to identify scope of work 

  • Assist with the creation of training materials, development activities and automation practices to advance team capacity. 

  • Ensure performance test strategy & performance tests enable our systems to operate over anticipated production volumes. 

  • Drive and foster innovation with toolset to increase team productivity, and deliver faster. 

  • Delivery of bug fixes and operational break fixes seen within the environment 

  • Responsible for supporting KTLO activities such as: 

  • Version Upgrades 

  • Functional changes 

  • Documentation updates 

  • Analyze, define, develop, test, and implement monitoring standards for systems and platforms. 

  • Develop, implement, and customize management packs, monitors, rules, alerts, thresholds and dashboards. 

  • Implement a multi-layered approach to the monitoring of the JCP systems including the physical host, operating system, services, application, interfaces and application experience. 

  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to monitoring configuration, mapping, processes and services, including operational processes and procedures. 

  • Participate in the transition process of newly monitored systems to operational teams. 

  • Monitor service requests and work orders for the group and ensure they are addressed in a timely manner 

  • Assist in troubleshooting production issues by providing insight into system health through the use of JCP’s suite of monitoring tools. Help determine the root cause of issues and understand proactive monitoring/alerting opportunities. 

  • Ensure the team and broader JCP organization understands and applies the established processes, policies, standards and procedures 

  • Assist in inventory and asset management in cloud, data centers and office locations 

  • Recommend best practices, monitoring tools, dashboards and other interfaces to further mature the JCP enterprise monitoring capabilities. 

Core Competencies & Accomplishments: 

  • At least 6 - 8 years' experience with multiple hardware platforms, integrated information management and monitoring systems. 

  • Highly driven, energetic, flexible, resourceful & ability to multitask 

  • Clarity of thought and vision 

  • Experience in the administration, maintenance and configuration of monitoring services in tools including Splunk, CA Wiley, SolarWinds preferred. 

  • Experience with monitoring Linux, Windows, virtualization stacks, databases, storage and networking devices 

  • Experience with additional Open Source monitoring tools is a must (Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, Hobbit etc.) 

  • Experience managing Hypervisors (ESX, Hyper-V, Xen) 

  • Experience monitoring Microsoft platforms (WMI and/or WinRM, Active Directory, Exchange, Lync, IIS, SQL Server) 

  • Experience with web servers and application stacks (Tomcat, JBoss, Nginx, Apache) 

  • Scripting skills (e.g., Bash, Perl, Ruby, Python) 

  • Experience integrating monitoring solutions with AWS (Flow Logs, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, GuardDuty) 

  • APM tools (AppDynamics, Dynatrace, New Relic, etc) 

  • Log Management (Splunk with knowledge in ITSI and ITOA) 

  • Network Monitoring (Thousand Eyes, DCRUM, SevOne) 

  • Infrastructure Monitoring (Solarwinds) 

  • Windows/Unix/AIX/Linux/Solaris Server, Server, Networking (Cisco), VOIP, IIS, Active Directory, SQL Server, Oracle Database, and Virtualization. 

  • Must skills on - SOAP/XML, JavaScript, Java, Python, .NET, Databases (Oracle, SQL, DB2, Postgress), Selenium, ELK, Heroku, PCF, AWS, Ansible, Jenkins, Morpheus 

  • Experience with, but not limited to, other system monitoring tools such as performance monitor, Microsoft SCOM ‘07/12, VMWare vCenter, Netcool, WireShark, andLog Parser preferred. 

  • Must have experience in Unix, Oracle PL SQL, Hadoop, ElasticSearch (preferable) 

  • Basic knowledge of Core Java, GitHub 

  • Predictive analytics knowledge and the relevant tools leverage the capabilities 

  • Capability to handle multiple Monitoring tools (Dynatrace, SCOM, Splunk, CA Wily, Net Cool etc..) to cover 

  • Full stack monitoring 

  • Deep understanding of all aspects of the application development and support life cycle 

  • Strong skills in analysis, testing and support/troubleshooting with deep specialist skills in Database, Unix 

  • Experience with event management integration with ITSM tools, such as BMC Remedy. 

  • Demonstrable knowledge of enterprise monitoring methodologies, tools and practices 

  • 5 or more years’ experience in system analysis, design, coding and testing. 

  • Well-developed business communication skills – both written and verbal 

  • Ability to naturally facilitative approach to problem solving 

  • Strong personal prioritization and time management 

  • Good knowledge in core enterprise infrastructure. 

  • Experience with x86 server hardware (HP/Dell), Microsoft and Linux based Operating Systems, and Virtualization technologies such as VMWare 

  • Broad understanding of IT concepts and architectures - Retail/business experience preferred 

  • Experience performing production & end user support 

  • Good attitude, go - getter and ability to grasp new skills in a minimal turnaround time. 

  • Motivated self-starter capable of working on individual tasks as well as team-oriented tasks.
