The Distinguished Architect will report to Sr Director of Architecture – Customer Experience Technology and will be part of the team that is responsible for Application Architecture that focuses on architecture/technology planning, designing and building software solutions for eCommerce, Store PoS and Customer Care Application systems. This entails:  (1) strategizing, roadmap planning, selecting, and driving the architecture, design and implementation of technology solutions to solve complex business problems (2) actively managing the on-going health, stability and supportability of the applications in alignment with IT Ops & Support, (3) managing the cost, contracts, and licensing associated with the portfolio, (4) leading and mentoring other portfolio architects and engineers to deliver technology solutions to meet business goals (5) partnering with other technology and business teams to deliver enterprise wide end to end technology solutions for JCPenney.  


Critical Primary Responsibilities: 


  • Lead architecture, design, build, technology evaluation, total cost of ownership, scope management, process improvement, for large scale cross-functional enterprise wide projects/programs through all phases of the SDLC. 

  • Expert and point-of-contact in core technical capabilities, processes, and applications for the retail merchandising, marketing, Item and pricing portfolio. 

  • Drive portfolio ownership by working with business users and executives to understand strategies and operations in order to develop technology capability roadmaps that are aligned with business/domain roadmaps.  

  • Lead and drive the conversation for long range business capability and architecture plans. 

  • Demonstrates breadth and depth of techniques and tools for one or many of the following: software product selection, technical score carding, architecture evaluation, use case modeling, data modeling, process mapping, performance and system scalability and scalability.  

  • Provides advisory consulting to business and IT executives as portfolio technical architect and consultant. 

  • Provides mentorship and coaching tojunior architects and engineers. Work with geographically diverse locations. 


Critical Skills & Experiences: 


  • Experience in architecting and implementing eCommerce or retail Point of Sale systems: Search application and Tools such as Oracle Endeca or Solr, eCommerce applications such was IBM websphere commerce or Oracle ATG, and custom development using web based open source software (i.e. Spring, Netflix OSS), cloud architecture (AWS, Azure or GCP) and micro-services architecture. 

  • Expertise in integration patterns (API, event-driven, batch, real-time streaming etc.) with various internal and external systems. 

  • Ability to design highly available systems with fallback capability. 

  • Experience with preparing systems for peak retail season 

  • Experience developing and leveraging relationships across cross-functional teams and organization charts 

  • Experience influencing organizational decision making both formally and informally 

  • Ability to develop and deliver technical trainings and Lead Organization change management (OCM) 

  • Expertise in business process mapping, fit-gap analysis, business process re-engineering 

  • Ability to lead end to end business processes and support business teams on the technology solutions 

  • Familiar with Agile, waterfall and iterative SDLC process 

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
