The Sr. Manager will be responsible for cloud platform engineering and operations for JCPenney’s eCommerce platform. This position will be leading a team of software/systems engineers in development and operation of JCPenney’s cloud native platform needed to facilitate the software development process to push new features from development to production in a predictable, low risk and agile manner. This position is also responsible for leading the cloud operations team to manage a highly reliable, scalable and available eCommerce platform.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a deep understanding in cloud architecture and computing, build/deployment automation, automated provisioning of environments, applications and systems & managing a highly scalable, high traffic customer facing ecommerce platform. You will be expected to improve team agility through coaching and implementing best practices. Need to have an attitude that embraces agile practices and automation. You will need enough technical depth to conduct deep dives, lead root cause analysis efforts and defend your opinions about infrastructure/platform engineering & automation practices. Need to have strong sense of urgency in solving problems and have solution oriented mindset. 

The candidate will work together with the product, application development, release engineering, architects, network/firewall, security teams to plan, develop, setup and operate the cloud platform engineering practices. Also ensure that teams have appropriate requirements, direction, and resources to deliver effectively. Help software/systems engineers resolve both technical problems as well as human resources issues. Provide guidance & coaching to motivate, and lead team members (direct reports) to their optimum performance levels and career development.  Coach the team to become an influential enabling shared service team instead of order-taking shared service team.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of software/systems engineers focused on infrastructure (cloud compute, storage, network, security etc.) & platform (CDN, API, Microservice, Containers, Persistence DB - Sql, no-SQL) engineering & automation of  JCPenney’ s customer facing ecommerce platform
  • Responsible for the platform and application performance monitoring, supporting continuous integration, performance optimization and peak season readiness activities for the JCPenney eCommerce platform
  • Collaborate with the architecture, application development, release automation, performance engineering  teams to contribute to development of the ecommerce eco-system
  • Ensure stability, supportability, performance & scalability of the ecommerce platform
  • Direct teams to optimize cloud operational cost as well as improve stability scalable via automation such as auto-scaling and auto-healing
  • Plan and manage scope to ensure commitments are achieved within agreed upon time, cost and quality 
  • Provide financial forecasts and ongoing reconciliation of resources and project costs
  • Manage, coach, and develop the analytical and technical skills of team members
  • Lead others to work effectively in a strong customer service/team oriented environment

Core Competencies & Accomplishments:

  • Exceptional technical and non-technical presentation and communication skills
  • Proven ability to lead a team of highly technical software/systems engineering staff and earn trust of team members and stakeholders
  • Proven technical knowledge of CICD (Continuous Integration Continuous Delivery) automation, tools to support application development lifecycle and project management discipline
  • Good technical experience in DevOps, software/systems engineer, software development & cloud engineering and operations, or related role
  • Knowledge of cloud computing (AWS, Azure, Google etc.) and cloud automation tools (Cloud formation, Terraforms etc.)
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
